Apple trees

Hi guy's and girls,

I have got two Apple trees to prune and cut back pretty hard. When's best to do them ? The owner would like them done ASAP. But I don't want to damage the trees.

Your thoughts on this would be really appreciated.

Why do you feel it needs a heavy prune ?

I work in a commercial apple orchard and we are currently pruning. It really does depend on the kind of apple as some varietys do like to be pruned about now. What kind of apple is it?

do they still spraying delancol and systhane

when they are dormant.

Nov to Feb.

other wise they are very susceptible to silver leaf,

June is for suckers and light pruning.

That's interesting - I've always thought of silverleaf being the greatest risk when trees are dormant (hence plums & cherries only pruned when growth starts) and the least risk June to Sept as the fruiting bodies appear in about September and stop producing spores around June. My understanding was also that silverleaf particularly likes damp conditions, hence June-July being particularly good for avoiding it, if we actually get a summer.
