Finally got round to making up a few sizes of eye tools all on a 1/4" shank. I'm also playing about with the idea of iris rings/pupils but TBH a dome seems just as affective to look at.

I firstly spun them up using a 240V drill which whilst worked didn't really give the burned look I wanted but then remembered I have a small die grinder type tool in a draw and that works really well.

Hi there I am very interested in how you made these eye burs are the just lathed from mild steel and is there any kind of abrasive surface inside the bur so it grinds the wood .

Thanks Alan

i have the same issue with mine. turned from mild steel (i included some gaps in the edge to let the wood out) they work ok with a drill but not really fast enough to burn it properly. i dont have a die grinder, just a dremell. might try turnign one to fit the dremel tho

I have tried several variations and for slow speed to increase friction I found they work best with no cutting edge or relief for burned waste dust just a straight forward cup on a shaft.

Pretty much the same for high speed, they will work in a drill with plenty of pressure, I will try and take a picture using the same tool at high speed die grinder type tool and drill.

I could knock a few up for sale at £10 each inc post if I can find up some suitable bolts........ materials are an issue for me.

This fish was made to add to an underwater scene, which I haven't made yet. But wanted to show you the eyes using your eye burning tool:001_smile:

I will post the money for the eye burning tools, plus extra for another 16mm one, please. Ray
