Mapping Software

Does anybody have any advice on mapping software?

I often have to print out maps to send guys to jobs and also for marking out areas on OS maps, and aerial images etc..

Cant seem to find any decent software to get 3d OS maps..

 

A friend of mine has some software from OS which allows 3d imaging and printing etc but it won't do aerial shots..

 

below is an example of a recent project aimed at grouse moor clearance for a local estate, but the image when printed was quite small and not really good enough to give to a client..

 

It looks fine on the computer but just not big enough or high quality.

Dont know if its exactly what you'r after but it would be worth looking at Anquet maps. I've used them for 3 or 4 years & the new version can even be loaded onto a smart phone and used with GPS.

Memory Map do 3d air photo etc. You can even simulate traveling the route!

if you just want 3d pics over aerial photos then use google earth, but for os data as well then anquet is pretty good, several guys i worked with used it as it was cheap and easy compared to the dedicated computer mapping packages

Ideally I would like to put all of our jobs onto OS maps and print them off for records..

Get ArchView, it's the system that fc and everyone else is using .

 

Just printing OS maps out and drawing on them with PC art packages is pretty mickey mouse .

 

Get a decent GIS system [with training, I'll give you a 5% discount:001_tt2:], the initial outlay will be high but it will be worth it in the long run. and get a decent gps as well

I use Memory Map for Green Laning it is the donkeys. You can print maps, routes, mark objects (waypoints or markers) I have a Road angel navigator which is compatible with memory map but it shows an OS map on the screen 1:25000 or 1:50000. I also have an Evermore GPS which can be used with a laptop showing your position on an OS map. Obviously being a larger screen you can view a larger area than a satnav.

I dont know if my budget will stretch as far as the FC.... have you got the software?? You can give me a run through next time i'm over!!!!

Arcview is way to expensive for any private firm! I agree it is a very user friendly system which i have used for the FC.

 

In the real world we use Mapmaker which allows 3d fly over of a landscape/forest etc. Its a great converting tool also. We often convert client dwg drawings into dxf for gps units and woodland mgt plans. Cost = £250 or so!

For Auto CAD specific drawings we use Turbo CAD a cheaper alternative to the £1500 Auto CAD. Think it costs around £90.00!

These two options will let you deal whith any current GIS/dxf/dwg/tff format drawings.
