Hi everyone, this is my first post on here so be gentle.:001_tongue:

just as an intro ill write a bit about myself

I've been in the tree game going on 9 years now and climbing for 4 years.

I run a small business (just me and casual groundsmen) and climb as a subby twice a week.

Having had a fair bit of luck with vehicles recently (LDV broke down on a monday and my beloved Land rover hicap 110 was stolen on the thursday), i was saving up to convert the Landy into a tipper, which brings me to my question.

A truck has come up for sale( a 1991 Renault dodge 50) and im thinking of getting it with my insurance moneys, its got a new tipper back, power steering fitted with a Perkins 4 litre engine, the body is mint and it looks like a real beast.

Does anyone have one or used one in the past in the Tree game?

its either this or a typical battered Transit for the same money.

Cheers

Oly

Anything over 3500kg needs to be on an operators licence, this means you need somewhere to park it (that's not your drive or the public road, a maintenance agreement, funds to runt it etc etc

Other than that its a good bus IF the cab isn't rotten, and it probably is....

I drove one when i was on the council, unladen it was 3600kg and laden it was 6300kg, even if the one you was looking at was under 3500kg as soon as you put any timber or chip on you would be over, i would of thought if you are on a public road you would need an o licence.

Good trucks don't give much problems cabs are a little prone to rust as are the chassis early ones had a blue painted engine always seemed faster than the later silver engined ones (Perkins phaser?) worked on god knows how many of them

Ye i think its been declassified so you can drive it on a normal license, max gross weight is 3.5 tonne, far as i know i should be able to park it anywhere.

thanks

Not a chance, its probably more than 3500kg empty and even if it weren't you wouldn't have any payload left

I run 3 rb44 and 3 dodge 50 there good rbs don't stop as well as dodge

They pull well but I do get stopped by vosa and may be in court over there interpret ion on the legislation

I don't wish to post to much as some people's viewpoints are different from mine and I only want to aid u not get irrated by another's viewpoint

Read the law read the exemptions read your licence

Make sure u are straight about ur use with ur insurer and its doable

Good luck

The Rb payload is 2.25 tons the dodge a fair bit more depending if twin wheels on rear axle u can get all the spares from Greg on dodge 50 forum he's sound knows everything about them

Thanks for the help.

far as i know the Renault 50 is approx 2.5 tonne so i could load it with a tonne and not need an operators licence .

obviously towing a chipper would increase the weight.

im in two minds whether to get it really, seems a bit of a risk overloading it an getting pulled

The chassis cab weighs a shade over 2000kg, put tipping gear and a body on that, add a couple of blokes and some saws and you wont be far short of 3000kg

So 500kg of payload +/-. Good luck getting them to down rate that for you.

On the up side the cab may be a bit lighter because of the bits that have rusted off it:laugh1:
