im planting a remote area beside a river, covered in sandy silty but damp material, thinking of chancing alder and willow, not mad pushed for a return just something worth planting for own heat without too much hassle..

Don't think you will be " chancing " anything . Sounds like Alder / Willow territory to me !

Put some Birch in as well, they seem to do alright down by the brook near us. Just don't put their feet in the water.

I'd chance sweet chestnut on the higher areas if there are any. Pretty tough tree, coppices well and would put up with the sort of relatively light but not over-dry soil you describe.

Couple of daffodil bulbs mate and chuck in a few tulips whilst your at it ?

too far to walk for flowers! the area is on the bank of a river, ill see how the alder does, ill put some willow and birch in over the next few months, thanks for replies
