Stihl 024 starting problems

I have a Stihl 024 and it has had no problems starting. This weekend ive tried to start it and nothing happened.

Looked at the spark plug to see if it was sparking, no sparks to be seen. Changed the spark plug and still there were no sparks.

I then tested all the wiring to make sure everything was connect and all the wires were fine.

I have the suspicion the ignition coil has gone but don't want to go buying one because if I have diagnosed it wrong then Im spending money on nothing. Or do I take it to a shop and get them to price it up for me (but with the saw being so old if the repair cost over a certain amount then I may as well buy a new saw).

Any comments/suggestion will be greatly appreciated :001_smile:

If you dont get a spark with the switch not connected and the coil gapped correctly it could either be the flywheel is knackered that is very rare or exactly what you think it is a coil. Have you checked the ht lead to make sure the spike for the plug is in the ht lead ??

Typically I set the flywheel to coil gap with a doubled up piece of A4 paper (smaller gap than normal, I disconnect the kill wire and then earth the plug on the cylinder away from the hole and give it a fast spin over in a semi dark area and look for a spark.

If it is not sparking, it is worth checking there is some form of continuity between the HT cap and the coil kill connection - if this is OK, it is a new coil time - the one good thing is that many of Stihls saws share the same coil:thumbup:
