660 chain brake greasing

Morning.

 

Spoke to Stihl yesterday about the now infamous 660 chain break issue.

 

Was told that a good clean and greasing will cure the problem.

 

Not sure if I believe that or not as the saw I originally had problems with was brand new and clean when problems occurred.

 

Has anyone else been told by their Stihl dealer about this being the cure for the problem. Honeys this morning hadn't heard of it.

Infamous? Not with me.....never 'eard of it. As a 660 owner I'm concerned.

Ok. It's nothing to do with the cleaning or greasing. It's the exhaust outlet near the handle and it heats the plastic up making it soft.

 

But I'm not sure if this issue has been sorted on the newer ones. The older ones are prone to it. I'm now convinced by this after I blocked off the outlet and made a new one on the front of the saw. This cured the issue straight away.

It's the exhaust as others have said. I'm yet toget round to making a piece of metal to stiffen that area up. That's the only other solution I have thought of

You could always get one of these and then just braze the existing outlet off with a plate.

I have the dual port already and like the extra performance (and noise!) so would go with strengthening the handle itself. Plus I can't braze but I can cut some metal to shape!

Take the exhaust to local fabricators and just get them to braze it.

I have a 660 and haven't noticed any problems yet with the chain brake,what is it doing to it? . Is there a part to cure said problem and cost off. Rob rainford what was the cost of porting , possibly would rather do that than buying replacement parts. Thanks

The chain brake becomes soft and then doesn't work unless you really thump it forward, sometimes it doesn't work at all.
