I think I'd sooner let the saw go with the lump, than clip to the tree and have the saw ripped in half.

 

You have a point but there is no guarantee it would get ripped in two, it could well let go in which case the saw would be better off on the lanyard, ya pays ya money and takes your chances. Best is to plan the works better
