I was pulling some windblown rootplates back in place today using tirfor style winch rated for 1.6 tonne lift and I snapped a safety pin. Plate was moving, very close to get it back in its original place, so I guess I need something a bit more than stated 1.6 tonne. Any advice on a budget tirfor-style winch?

Also what do you use to extend the line if the cable is not long enough, again in a pull of more than 1.6 tonne.

cheers

Peter

block sounds like a good idea but it would mean I need more cable as the windthrown stump is quite away from winch attachment point. So back to the question what kind of rope would you use to extend the line. I used my old rock climbing rope doubled but it still snapped.

Quick derail but I'll shut up when I get the answer. I have a big Tirfor (5 ton pull): presumably that means that to double up I need a 10 ton snatch block...?
