Most people here like Palax, Posch and Dalen. Expensive but good machines., tend to be heavily built.

Lesser machines such as Jappa, Hakki etc are fine especially if you use them yourself, not as heavily built as the top 3.

Tajfun seem to be offering what looks a decent machine but there are only a handful of people here with them so far. Duun is another to look at.

Rotary blade is better able to stand cutting dirty timber, most will cut 100 cube or more before re sharpen, tips are expensive if you cut into steel within a log. Noisier than a chainsaw type.

My mate has put over 650 tons through his Palax this year and we haven't had a proper winter . I'm sure it did more last year . Never let him down ......

I have run a Japa 700 for 6 years it was second hand when I had it,Previous owner used it for 4 years and it was not new for him !!

I have put approx 2500 ton through this machine with only a few sets of belts and a couple of bearings,

I bought a new tipped blade £120 delivered to the door so we have a spare we can put around 300 ton through before changing an the worst thing we hit removed 17 tips to re tip and sharpen cost less that £40

It has been a very good machine and the back up from Fuelwood is excellent

Palax combi is a good processor to start out with and some of the older ones can be picked up pretty resonable with plenty life left in them!

give jim a ring at caladonian forestry he will be able to sort you out and hes good to deal with cheers.

I also run a Japa 700, decent machine but does not like abuse, log tray tends to bend. Dont put anywhere near the volume of some through it but have only replaced belts so far after about 300 tons. It is though a pain in the backside to service, one main shaft grease nipple is impossible to get at when connected to a tractor. When I replaced the main drive belt set it was an all day job.

Other machines are faster especially on bigger timber, but on smaller timber especially it cuts as fast as anything else.

Overall it has done a good job for me but as my volumes grow and my time to spend processing does not get any more I will soon need to move up or hire a big processor or buy in ready cut.

Thanks everyone,

I think there is a scam on eBay as there was a Hakki for sale for 5k + vat then it ended and was relisted from a different location and seller was asking just 2000 without vat and said they could deliver at no cost....dodge!! Didn't seem to add up. Beware

Yeah Caledonian forestry are having their open day on the 2nd & 3rd May, demonstrating new and used Palax firewood processors along with other forestry equipment & machinery.

Its always a good chance to find your perfect processor and I'm sure if you speak to Jim he will sort you out with a great deal on the day!

if you want to know more their number is 01764 663798

Personally I agree with major the Combi is always a good place to start, but it just depends on what you're gonna be processing I suppose
