As mentioned in another thread, I'm looking at planting some blackthorn hedging but various people have brought up the fact that it will send out suckers. This isn't a problem on my side of the fence but would the neighbours the other side have any legal right to complain? It's about 50 yards from their house and against a fairly rough piece of grass but we're not on the best of terms

Should I bury a barrier into the ground to stop them suckering?

They have the right to complain, just like anybody does...

I've never heard of suckering blackthorn leading to any legal action though. I'd have thought that the suckers would be considered in the same way as falling leaves. Out of the control of the owner of the tree and therefore not their responsibility?

Yes it will sucker. They will cut them off. Problem solved.

If you are already on bad terms, then I wouldn't worry. If you get on well and it's a posh lawn then I wouldn't plant them. Mine goes for 10 metres on the far side of the fence!!

][/ame]If I didn't like my neighbours I'd definately send some blackthorn their way. I hate the stuff almost as much as it seems to hate me.

I do however like Sloe Gin:
