Can anyone suggest a good book on chainsaw construction and maintenance. Reading through Chainsaws forum makes me realise how little I know about these machines

Many thanks:confused1:

Never read one - I have on two stroke tuning but don't think you will find a book to give you what you need - I believe most techs experience comes either from training or picking up years of experience and a mechanical mind!

I'll look out for a scrap saw and have a play. I notice from reading "Whats on my bench" that lean sieze ups are a common problem. Would an operator get prior warning e.g change in engine note and save himself a disaster? Could a user know when the crankcase seals are leaking? Many thanks

When an engine seizes it will either be a very slight one and the machine will run after but will lack power or the saw will just die and not restart with lack of compression.

Common signs of air leaks -

peed

bogging mid revs

Soaring high revs

idle suddenly becomes faster and uneven

The saw will not fall back to the set idle speed straight away but hangs on a fast idle speed for a few seconds

I demand to know why "Spud" is allowed to fix, and indeed tune chainsaws?

Without the appropriate "tickets"

As in they should probably disintegrate in the users hands.

If one buys into the notion that no one can know or be competent merely based on practise and observation:

experience*intelligence=competence.

just a thought
