Adblue or DEF question

A new truck I'm considering uses Adblue additive, which is basically

a urea solution injected in controlled amounts by the vehicle into the

exhaust, upsteam of the catalytic convertor. The urea and the cat

convert the NOx in the exhaust gasses into nitrogen and water.

Great idea.

My question is...what happens if I don't use the additive,

like say I run out, or get tired of buying the stuff :001_tt2:

Dependant on the vehicle, it will also have the engine management cut in and effectively detune the engine... as with most engine management systems, they look at what should be happening and if something is wrong will drop power to save engine wear and cut down on the risk of engine failure. The fact that the sensors pick up the wrong emissions at the exhaust, will tell the engine management that something is wrong. You'll lose a bit of power and chances are, it'll run rough. Adblu is only cheap, so keep it topped up at regular intervals to save a lot of wasted money, like replacing the cat'.

speak to one of the specialist diesel tuning companies and get the ECU "tweaked" to remove the adblue requirement, also any DPF or EGR bits all they do is restrict and kill the longevity of the diesel engine

a properly set up and maintained pump and engine will run clean and efficient enough to pass any emission test

Ah, I suspected that might be the answer. Seems there may be a way around it, thanks agrimog. The vehicle is the new Isuzu N35.150 (Euro6). Having said all that, I might be buying an older vehicle without these complications. Thanks for the input, food for thought.
