IBC plastic tank

Does anyone know if the plastic tank from an IBC is ok to fill up with water without the cage around it? I'll probably give it a try anyway, if it breaks, it breaks, but just wondered if anyone had done it.

 

Using the cages for logs which is why I want to use the plastic without if possible

I use 2 for rain water butts.

I always assumed the cage and pallet were there for safe stacking, transport and storage.

Do you have them in or out of the metal cage?

I have filled them without and they bulge a lot but did not split. This was not a long term thing so no idea how long it would hold. Read somewhere that the tanks that have ridges are more prone to splitting than those without.

Bloke at a big greenhouse near us filled a bunch of ibc bubbles with water - wished he hadn't! Couple started leaking but the others just turned into a great big blob - couldn't be moved or anything. Much better left in the cages I reckon. They also tend to go brittle after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

I think long term you need to keep them in the cage...

Yes cage is a bit like a corset, keeps it in shape. If you do use them out of a cage. A firm flat surface underneath and only use them static. Also keep them out the sun for long life.

Cheers for the replies. Might stick it on a wooden pallet and knock up some timber supports to stop it bulging too badly. Don't really want to give up an IBC cage!

it's not so bad in the cold weather, but a few hot days in summer will soften the plastic, you could always build a wooden box to support the tank.
