General question. What are the likely causes of a mower backfiring. SV150 flat head engine on a cheap b &qish mower. Timing? Had the flywheel off - key is fine. Could carb play a role?

I assume you do actually mean backfire, rather than misfire?

If so ,its usually a sheared flywheel key, but you have checked that.

So it could be the coil gap, or even a duff coil.

The carb obviously needs to be functional and clean.

But it could be the valve clearances. Those engines are also prone to head gasket failure, so worth popping the head off for a decoke, adjust the valves and replace the head gasket.

Or better still, bin it.
