026 melting

Hi all,

Been a long time lurker and this is my first post. Hope it's in the right place!

A friend of mine dropped his 026 off to me in box in bits for me to "have a look at". He told me that the last time he used it there was a bit of smoke coming out of it, when I took it out of the box I was taken by surprise, it appears to be melting behind the clutch. I've not seen this before, Do u have any idea what the cause could be and what to do to fix it?

Look to me like the plastic oil drive has melted seeing as the pin that fits in the drum is there but no centre. That's about the only plastic/nylon thing in there that would melt apart from prob the main seal which will have been screwed to.

 

Is there slack in the main bearing if you wiggle the crank? Maybe a bit of cord or somethings gone in there and caught up in the oiler drive but that's clutching at straws.

I asked him if it had been left ticking over with the brake on for a long time, and he says no he always just switched it off if he wasn't using it for more than a minute!

There doesn't seem to be any play at all in the shaft strangely!

Am I correct in thinking it would be a complete strip to change that bit of the case and are they easy to find new or used?

First get that clutch centre off(remember its a reverse thread) and then i would get in there and peel all the plastic and crap off it and give it a clean up first so you can see better and what your dealing with.

 

The crankcase is magnesium so should be ok its down to the main bearing really.

The main seal, oiler clutch and drum etc are straight forward without having to split the crankcase. (ie they fit on the end of the crank without having to go deeper)

If it needs the main bearing the crankcase will need to be split so a much bigger job.

I dont believe it, every saw like this ive seen is the result of being left running with the brake on.

 

The melted part is what the saws built around, so you will need at the least, New main case, new crank seals, new clutch, new oil worm, new brake band, new drum bearing.

That saw pictured is not an 026. its the 021 023 025 ms210 ms230 ms250 type of saw.
