Best kit for starting out milling?

Hi everyone.

 

Just after some advice on a starter set up to do some milling. A friend of mine owns a farm and quite often has some vary mature oaks come over in the wind and up until now I have just been logging it all up for the farm cottages.

 

So here's the question.

 

What's the best saw and bar length? Also what milling equipment do I need to get stared? I'm looking at a portable system! I was looking on Frjones but ended up confusing myself.

There's a mountain of info on this in the forums you just need to do a bit of research, I did it a while back great source of info.

 

Basic, set up would be, get hold of the biggest saw you can and kit it out with an alaskan mill, you can go as simple or expensive as you like.

 

Chainsaw mills

I use a 660 and have 20, 30 and 36 inch bars and milling chains which I use on a 36 inch Alaskan. I chose a 660 because I also use it for other cross cutting and felling and its far more useful than an 880 would be - but that's just my opinion. You can cut wider logs with this set up you just need a mini mill as well so you can quarter-saw the log

With a 36 in h mill can you do 20 30 and 36 then? Pardon my ignorance just iv been looking at it too

First off what is the size of the timber your going to be milling?

Not sure on timber size guess it depends what's available to cut?

Rob D on alaskan mills is a good place to both buy and get info.

Buy a big old chain saw and get a 36 inch bar for it. Then a granberg milling chain off rob and an Alaskan III 36 inch (better value than 30inch). Then a cheap aluminium ladder off google and drill holes in each rung to get a straight start. Voila!
