Jensen A530 problem

Happy new year everyone,

I recently bought a 2nd hand 2004 A530 750kg chipper. Cracking bit of kit.

The top roller has a cable and spring tensioner, here is the problem.

The guy I bought it from told me the cable gives up every so often and gave me a spare which he had had made up. I've been to Redwoods and they sell the replacement cable, and have told me its a design problem and to keep it greased.

Fitting the new one is neither dificult nor overly expensive (if not too often!)

I've thought about getting a plasma rope made up with 2 spliced eyes as a replacement for a cable. I know this would be more expensive than the cable, but in theory should be better in the long run.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Would plasma rope be any better or should I just get the Redwoods cable?

Thanks in advance guys, I look forward to your comments.

I wouldn't bother, nor would I go to the main agent for the cable. I took mine to the lifting specialist I use and he made me 4 new ones for a fiver each.

I have a spare one taped inside the cover.

Greasing the cable wont make any difference, the problem is that the same short section of cable works around the pulley and fatigues.

Just fitted one on mine this week. Stainless steel from redwoods for £25. Quick question though, the top roller seems to have dropped and the yolk and gap above is now visible when looking down the chute. Does this sound like a bearing issue or a build up of crud?
