Jonothan,

I bin idely looking at 2nd hand mills in the states.

Except akina reluctant to risk a 2nd hand mill, other than through a reputable dealer.

Cookssaw got a 51 hp diesel AC-3651 (IS IT?) "on consignment".

$27,000.00 with 450 hours thereon.

I could seriously consider it.

Except these big sawmills require (quite?) some stripping down to even fit in a Hi-cube container.

Have you found any companies making a bandsaw equivalent of the Alaskan chainsaw mill? ...ie, working on the same principles/ being easily portable, etc

I am no-where near as "au-fait" as Jonothan in respect of band-sawmill manufacturers. Nor indeed bandsawmilling.

Anyway I restricted myself to, what I leastwise had cause to deduce, were reasonably large established manufacturers.

From Google searches cross-referenced with, for example, advertising on the Forestry Forum.

Might now even wait until the APF show since I would not wish to mill timber cut in the Spring or Summer, though I could get some practise in on sap-laden stuff.

At least that would give me some purpose for my planned excursion to the APF.

Regards,

Marcus

Actually Jonothan I would consider an LT35HD.

With 2 of my mothers brothers extended families living in Canada I could probably simply get them to buy the mill for me and ship it.

Though I suppose they would be liable for local sales taxes, that I would not be.

I did not particularly wish to ask an American WM dealer to ship me a mill.

Anyway I believe the super-duper $19,000.00 offer was only for mills collected from the factory, and may no longer be valid anyway.

regards

Marcus

PS

Is there much merit in Cookssaw vehment assertations that crowned steel balanced wheels are better than inherently unbalanceable belted bandwheels?

There is one - the Ripsaw. Portable means relatively small, but it has a 14" width x 9" depth so will cope with most things. It can be temperamental but when it's in a good mood it flies.

I have one bolted to an 044 and it will rip oak boards out at speed. The last big oak that Burrell and I did I was taking quartersawn boards about 10" average width x 10' length off faster than the two people could carry them off and stack them 30ft away!

Good luck trying to persuade the makers to ship you one though.
