Retrenchment pruning

This was phase 1 of a retrenchment program for this oak, it had some large breakouts in the past and a small bracket that I took to be Ganoderma applanatum at the base, the rot isn't too bad so I think its got years and years left in it.

Tom, how many phases are planned for the retrenchment, and will there be set number of years between the phases?

I had a meeting with Neville Fay today, we chatted abit around this process.

He talked me through a series of photos of a phased retrenchment, that his company is carrying out on a Beech with both Merripilus and Ganoderma.

The Tree has recently had it's third retrenchment within a dozen or so years, and is programmed for a couple more yet.

The crown vitality is pretty impressive.

Did you use NFP or NTP?

Nice work btw :cool1:

NTP Monkey, we don't have a formalised plan, we'll just monitor it annualy and see what needs to be done. Probably a reduction in height in a few years time. The only problem is its in a private garden so there's no guarentee that we'll get another go at it, hopefully we will though.

This is new to me, NFP, 4 phases etc.

Can you elaborate a bit? Don't be frightened to over-simplify on my account!

I could, but posting this link is way easier

It's a very good starting point.

Then have a butch at earlier threads on here such as.....

WARNING !!

This has the capacity to close the open minded Arborists minds eye, and disgust his desire to over manage and subjugate his dominance upon his charge.

Read at your peril !
