Fencing, how many strands

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions as to how many strands of barbed wire you can use on a fence or heights etc.

The reason I ask is the pilchard who I am having problems with on my land and who has the fence on my land has about seven strands of barbed wire in places starting at 6" from the floor and spaced every six inch up.

My dogs are geting injured left right and centre. Pete McSheffrey has just been to the house and pointed out two big scratch marks on the dogs backs and then I've noticed one of them has a big hole at the side of his eye.

I'm getting sick of them injuring themselves on low barbed wire and wondered if there was anything I could do to force him to see to it.

Although the fence is technically mine and on my land, I can't touch the fence at the moment because of a legal wrangle going on over him knicking my land and the fence with "squatters rights"

If I did that on an FC job I'd be shot! That's flaming ludicrous - barbed at 6" intervals all the way up! Stock control is based on retention not injury as far as I'm concerned and doing what you've described is thoughtless to say the least. My agreement however aint the legal chapter and verse but I've never heard of or seen such barbaric boundaries. Wish I knew more on this one, might consult something/one... Most I've ever seen was three; one 6" from ground and two toppers; altho a single second from top barbed wire is normal IME. Law is much clearer where the fence is next to a highway or ROW I think...

I am sure its only meant to be the top strand.

Why not find a dead badger from the side of the road, one thats not too mangled and then tangle it up in the fence. Then call the rspca or the councils environmental warden.:001_smile:

It is YOUR responsibility to fence your animals & stock in to save members of the public from danger from animals & animals from dangers beyond your boundaries

Ergo if you want your dogs not to be hurt by barb wire then keep your dogs under proper control or place a fence in front to protect your dogs from the danger beyond.

If it is your land the fence is on & it is shown on plans/deeds as being yours then just be a man and rip down his barbwire fence and return it to him and put your own up in the correct place.

The staples are on his side.

Mark, it's not as simple as it's mine so I'll take it down.

The barsteward has just put in for and now has title to my peice of land the other side of the fence before the river which is the registered boundary.

So he has title but is not neccessarily the legal owner, I have now had to instruct solicitors to prove the land is mine and close the title.

In the mean time I have to treat the fence as his property. This all came about because I gave him notice I was removing the fence and for him to make provisions to retain his stock.
