A Eucalyptus log.

Recommended Posts

Got it - cheers. I thought the usual way would have been to have the bottom of the bowl towards the outside of the tree so you get a flat rim and so that half the bowl at least curves with the outside of the wood but I'm assuming that the rim of yours is the curve of the branch/stem.

when you do either a large bowl or use a tiny bit of wood then you do exactly that, but alot of bowl blanks these days are cut from planks rather than rough logs.

i've just done a few nests of bowls from beech and i've had a small log roughly 18"x36" cut down the lenght then each length cut in half to make four bowl blanks. they of course have the flat of each half log at the rim and i used a bowl saving device to make the nest. from one log i got 4 blanks and each blank yeilded 4 per nest. so a single log can giv you 16 bowls in the right hands...

Great response guys, thanks.

I've sen how Euc rings split a few weeks after cutting but I didn't know if this would occur on a complete trunk.

It was felled in hot weather and it stayed hot for a further month.

I'm thinking that if it produces splits down the length, I could make features of them by opening them up a bit.

If it works I'll put the photos

If it doesn't, I'll put the photos up!
