Hydraulic not an option so what do people recommend please?

Speed not really a big priority as we have all summer to split 20 to 30 tons but ease of use a bonus...

Depends on your splitter location, my yard has no electricity so petrol is the only real option. If I had electricity I would of bought a electric one (cheaper to run,you can listen to the radio while using it)

I have a pto splitter myself, so no experience of either above. But would i be right in thinking an electric model might require a little less maintenance compared to a petrol (at least on an annual basis, no oil changes etc) - also you might be inclined to opt for a petrol in terms of accessibility, but one could always hook up an electric to a generator for the occasional move away away from a mains power supply.

Why not hydraulic ? You can have hydraulic in both electric and petrol or diesel come to that . Any way if you don't want hydraulic then the only two I can think of woul;d be a cone splitter ( either run of a tractor pto or with its own engine ) or the just recently imported " rapid fire " type splitters which have a petrol engine turning a fly wheel which then engages a pinion on a rack and fires the wedge a relatively high speed down the log .
