Walnut is traditionally done in summer (full leaf) as they can 'bleed' profusely. With beech just be careful not to expose too much bark to full sun as the thin bark can suffer from sunburn.

if you are a stickler - from now, you are best pruning all broadleaves (except a few exemptions like the walnut) after leaf fall. Its to do with trees energy depletion just as the leaves are falling. Shigo mentions it in one of his books - "the askanasi potential energy curve" please excuse any spelling mistakes, my spell check isn't working.

Morning

Does anyone know of a good book that tells you the best time to cut specific trees?

Thanks

I have a fairly good RHS book on trees and shrubs that states "time to prune" under each plant.

The Pruning of Trees Shrubs and Conifers by George E Brown sets out a lot of info about how to prune and timings. Its a bit dated now but can be still very useful.

I think the current thinking for the best time to prune trees (most trees) is mid-summer and not during their dormant season. (tin hat on)

I think the current thinking for the best time to prune trees, is, based on observation in the field, scientific thought and fiscal planning, the day after payday then the client has the funds to pay your invoice

Fixed that for ya:laugh1:
