if you are a stickler - from now, you are best pruning all broadleaves (except a few exemptions like the walnut) after leaf fall. Its to do with trees energy depletion just as the leaves are falling. Shigo mentions it in one of his books - "the askanasi potential energy curve" please excuse any spelling mistakes, my spell check isn't working.

The Pruning of Trees Shrubs and Conifers by George E Brown sets out a lot of info about how to prune and timings. Its a bit dated now but can be still very useful.

 

I think the current thinking for the best time to prune trees (most trees) is mid-summer and not during their dormant season. (tin hat on)

I think the current thinking for the best time to prune trees, is, based on observation in the field, scientific thought and fiscal planning, the day after payday then the client has the funds to pay your invoice
