Joseph buford cox is your man for the birth of modern chainsaws... plenty of people had been making portable wood cutting chainsaws for decades, but in the mid 40's mr cox invented chipper chain, the first modern cutting chain, with raker and hooked cutter like we know and love today. In 1947 he setup the oregon saw chain co. the rest is history

Was thinking this while chopping down a sticky coni today. It does make life easier (when they work proper)

 

Emil Lerp invented and tested the first portable chainsaw in Germany and tested it on mount Dolmar and then a few years later Stihl put their first portable saw into the market.

 

This was always argued between Dolmar and Stihl, when I worked for Sachs Dolmar it was part of our presentation.

 

prior to that there were several large saws on frames using scratcher chain.

 

Then in 1947 Joe Cox watched some wood beetles whilst having a sarnie and Oregon Chain was born [who I work for now 11yrs +]
