stihl chainsaw question

Hi.. new to this forum but long time forum users on many areas...

 

bought a new stihl chainsaw yesterday and great stuff but 14" bar is short... any way I can upgrade the bar and chain to a longer bar??

u sed to have old chainsaw but broke. Bought macallister but crap so took it back and bought stihl! Should I keep mc171 as is and use for smaller logs and get another longer chainsaw? Advice needed.

You can fit a longer bar - say 16" but you will find that your saw will bog in the cut and make a reasonable saw in to something that will frustrate you.

 

You will notice that the chain on your saw is a 1.1mm gauge where most pro saws use 1.5/1.6mm, there is a reason for this, if you put a larger gauge chain on your saw and it will again bog in the cut.

 

So, IMO - leave it as is, if you need to cut larger wood - buy a larger saw!

Keep it as it is and buy a 360/1/2 or a 461/2.

With the 461/2 u easily run a 25" bar and chain

Or save loads of time, buy an 880 with a 48" bar, you can chop everything up at once...

Yes you can fit a bigger bar, it won't be worth it though to be fair, you'd be better off getting either a stihl ms211 or a husqvarna 236 or 135 for what you want, or go that bit further, ms251/271 or husky 440/445/450

Got a friend who's got a MS 171 on 14" and it bogs on anything thicker than 100mm... if it's decided to run that day.
