Flakey bark on Lime

Any one know whats going on with the bark on this lime? Should I be concerned, it is a 20m tree within 4 m of several properties. The tree officer thinks its not significant. ..

Have you sounded the stem out for soundness with a hammer? Try to determine if the bark is lifting in patches.

 

Despite the bark flaking is the cambium still intact underneath it?

I forgot my hammer... I'll return tomorrow There is no sign of decay and I guess the cambium is still intact. It's not coming off in big patches, but flaking in small strips, if you gave it a good poke you could stip of lots of small pieces, but not like you might get with the honey fungus mycelium..

Could it just be the cambuim has a bacterial infection effecting new phloem cells being produced.(scratches head lots).

That fence alongside looks very new, judging by the state of the posts and gravel boards.

 

Maybe the fencing lads have upset it?? reaction to alkaline conditions from the concrete? Bit unlikely, Lime's are so tough usually.
