There are few saws you can't get parts from stihl for in the uk, with parts readily available even for the 070/090, of which there is a job lot on eBay right now! And at the right time of the year, they fetch stupid money!

As for a brake, I operate my 090 and a homelite VI944, neither have a brake, it helps adapt to the correct posture when operating, making sure you don't stand behind the damn thing, it's all too easy to put faith in safety features and become sloppy! Brake bands snap, so do chain catchers!

a very valid point as i found out today on my 136, break band snapped!!! I do seem to have a habit of whenever i finish a cut clicking the break on, even if it is just for 30 seconds whilst i look where i am going to make my next cut, probably does not do my saw much good. I do take on board what you are saying about adopting the correct posture and i would like to think i am very aware of risks when using the saw and do what i can to minimize them, but i would defiantly prefer to use a saw with a break for added piece of mind.

Given the overall spec. I would be looking at an 075 or 076. They can be had in working order for around £300 as a powerhead (or significantly less if you are lucky on ebay). If you're lucky they come with a chainbrake. If not, it can be retro-fitted and are available from ebay.de (but check it has the right sort of handle). It will handle the milling without ever struggling or getting tediously slow or bogged down, will do occasional big felling/stumping and although performance is not exciting and power to weight is not good by modern standards it will slog on all day. It will pull a 4ft bar without any effort, and will hold its value. All parts are still available, most of the key ones as OEM or pattern.

If your lucky saws turn up on eBay.

I bought a 95cc Jonsered and 99cc Husqvarna from there.

Both are in good nick and will run a 36" bar in an Alaskan Mill.

I'm guessing that you aren't that far away from me? - I live near Lindale.

If you want to see an Alaskan mill and a mini mill (great for the smaller stuff and beams) let me know.
