Quick question: Sakura - is that the name of the tree, or the generic term for all cherry blossom?

What an amazing Tree.

 

What's the story behind the reduction work?

Not sure about reduction .

my guess is that the branch got damaged sometime over the winter, probably from heavy snow (gets pretty bad in Kyoto) they pruned it back so it looks better for Sakura , but leavening a stump so that disease didn’t get in to the branch below, they’ll probably prune it back further at a better time of year, but that’s only a guess, what u think?

 

Like what you did with the oak on the other thread, very Zen, the Japanese would have done exactly the same thing IMO, anything old over there is pretty much considered a god..

..............and I'm pretty pleased with this photo as I couldn't actually see the Robin when I took it. I just saw it fly in so held my phone out at full stretch incase I spooked her.

 

She is now sitting with five chicks. I shall try and get another photo.
