MS260 oiling problem

Hi,

Just bought a 260 and there appears to be a problem with oiling. It doesn't leak when at rest. Oil flicks off the tip of the bar so some of it is making it the whole way. A lot of it is collecting underneath the sideplate and dripping out downwards. Upon inspecting beneath, there is oil over everything. It appears to only be coming from the oiler outlet, just there's far too much of it.

 

I have emptied out the oil tank and cleaned it out, blown it through, taken off the small metal plate and blown through what I presume to be some sort of air intake to the oiling system. I have changed the bar/chain over for another. I'm running standard Oregon bar oil. I have altered the oiling rate setting to top middle and bottom.

 

Any ideas?

Have you checked the hole in the bar is clear of chip? It is easy to spin the bad around and forget to clear it and get not a lot of oil out of the bar!

 

Is the thin stainless plate fitted to the bar studs?

 

Other than that, check you haven't a hole in the pipe that connects the pump to the outlet channel.

Thanks for the replies guys, the tube appears fully intact and the bar holes are fine and the stainless plate is intact and appears fine. It does oil the bar, just I think at the moment I'll have to look in the oil tank way before I empty the fuel tank!

Just read this again - as JLA says, you do know that the oiler has an adjuster screw accessed from underneath the machine - this screw on maximum gives out enough oil for the maximum size bar you would use on the machine so if you are using a 13" or similar on it and it is set on maximum, you are likely to get too much oil being used.

 

Another thing to check is that the oil tank breather only lets air in and not out - take the stainless plate off, remove the filler cap, LEAVE THE SAW ON ITS BASE otherwise th eoil wil come out:001_rolleyes:

 

Put a soft rubber pipe/fuel line over the breather/vent (small round aluminium plug with a hole in it above the bar mount studs) and blow and suck, you should be able to blow in to the tank but not suck out.

 

If this is leaking, it is possible to get lots of oil leaking out if the saw is stored on its side.

 

Other things to check - the bar oiler hole is not a through hole (right through the bar) and that the oiler pickup does have a filter on the end of it.

 

Not sure I can think of much else!

Hi, it's a 15" bar and I've set the oiler adjuster at lowest and highest and problem persists. I've left it sat on its side on a piece of paper to see if the oil tank breather is leaking.

 

It is usually lack of oil that is an issue and not too much:lol:

 

What sort of oil do you use - is it because it is very warm at the moment and the oil is naturally more fluid?

 

I guess if it is a real problem, you could fit a reducer in the oiler outlet hole - a small piece of smaller diameter pipe would do! Think I would really want to find a true solution though.

Oil is standard Stihl chain oil.

 

Haven't had a chance to get it back on the bench again but have in my mind ruled out everything apart from the oil pump itself. There's a genuine one (but used) and a non-genuine but new one on ebay at the moment. Before I do, I'm trying to work out what could be defective within the pump so I don't replace the part unnecessarily.

 

Can anyone see anything that I'm missing on these please?

And I've ordered replacement springs for the clutch as these appear pretty slack, although it looks like it's seen only low use? How could the springs be so untight?
