I didn't mean it was the best option but up till 30 years ago English sawmills wouldn't pay much for chestnut ( because of shake??) and then a couple of firms realised there was a demand from Portugal.

 

The interesting thing was that the Portuguese would mill short logs and butt joint random widths for things like drawer bottoms. Also around this period I started noticing pub table tops in chestnut.

 

We were able to sell sc coppice that had gone over rotation length and all the time the bark remained smooth there didn't see to be any shake even on sandy ground and the Portuguese would by sawlogs at 8"qg where British mills would not accept butts less than 12 or 15 "qg.

 

Have sold tons for export though Vastern Timber Co,and all the above is bang on,no merchants just taking the quality and leaving you with second/third grade to sell for firewood.

Get in touch with your local woodland officer at the Fc. They'll have advice on the grants available including for creating a management plan. It might not be a lot as its a small coup but every little helps. They can't recommend contractors but can help with possible options for management objectives. They will also be the person dealing with your felling licence. Best of luck.

Minimum payment for a Management plan is £1000. Anyone charging you more than that, for this size of wood, is a crook, and with some input from your local FC guy, should be something you can do yourself.
