friction saver

not necesarily could be fine dependant on type of crab and type of pulley

problem with crabs as top anchors imo is they can end up loaded wrongly and get caught against the stem and your not close enough to keep an eye on them

could you change crab to a mallion ???

and also sometimes pulley and ring do not always allow pulley to run easy and true and a bit of rope damage occurs

pic of set up or list of components would help but how exactly you use it and what diameters does affect how it runs

p.s i have had 2 instances when i have been on site and crabs used with pulleys have been found open or gates damaged whilst been in use and i personally now will not put myself in that position

my life is worth more than buying a proper tool for a proper job

if i use a pulley in a cambium saver it has been designed to be used that way

or i just use a cambium saver as standard

Cheers Bob, I`ll get a pic tomorrow and post it.

Jamie. to get round the splicing into the ring. do you think i could just us a figure of 8 Descender. and just splice into the small ring. just a idea. plus you can pick one up for about £7.00.

I had a go at making one with an 8, just with wide tape through the small eye, doubled up and stitched all the way down, terminating in a stopper.

I think it would work fine, but it is a bit bulky, and it could stick in forks during retrieval.

Just to update you Bob, I did take a pic but my card reader is playing up so no pic at the mo!

Basically i use a cambium saver with the small ring cut out and put an ISC 3 way carab(pear shaped) through it holding a fixed cheek petzel 13mm pulley. I always hang the carab so the gate is facing away from the tree stem.

Hope this makes sense, if not, i will put the pic up when i can get this electro-gadget thing working!

looks ok

how does the cambium saver sit in the crab does it seem to sit ok or pull a bit at the sides and distort the eye of cambium saver and does it touch gate mechanism.

what about taking crab off and feeding cambium saver end through saver big ring then putting crab back on if not retrieving it?? just a thought

does the pulley sit nice in the bottom of the crab or does it slip to one side.

If a proper hms it should be ok i am a fan of ovals for both ends to sit nicer.

But as i have previosly stated i have been on site twice when the crabs have been found to be open or faulty and personally do not think the pulley makes enough difference opposed to using a standard cambium saver to warrant ME having a crab up there that i often can not see and check

a pulley by itself will have less friction than having a ring next to it.

Hope this made sense as i know what i meant but sempt to go of on one

feel free to comment or disagree

carabina choice and suitability is very often overlooked as to how they load and sit most of us just use whatever we have and not think about whether we would be better with an oval offset d hms ect

All sounds great from what you say bob, the only thing i need to check is that the eye of the cambium saver is not distorting as you say. I suppose i could get a maillon that is a better shape if it is, guess ive always used the isc for ease of fitting.

What you say about compatability between different kit is, as you say very important, but i dare say is very easily overlooked. This is another BIG can of worms i suppose.

Cheers for that Bob, and sorry for the picture quality!
