Spluttering Powerless MS361

Look for some pointers please guys as to what might be causing the following symptons with my MS361.

Had been using the saw earlier in the day with no problem. Started and ran OK

It had rested for approx 2hrs before I needed to use it again. This time it suddenly became very difficult to start, its was turning over but "not firing up", for about 15-20 mins of trying (& cursing & swearing).

Then It suddenly fired up and ran fine for a bout 5 mins. Just as quickly though it went from picking up the revs and cutting just fine, to a short idle period (seconds) to hitting the trigger for my next cut only to have the saw coughing and pluttering, and failing to pick up the revs at all.

When I take my hand off the trigger, the saw just stalls out. It starts again with difficulty. But its is still sputtering and not picking up the revs, although the chain is moving.

The saw has recently (within the last month) had a new spark plug and fuel filter fitted. Over the last few weeks the saw has been tempremental at re-starting from "warm" without the chainbrake being off! (Though why should this make a difference?)

Was gonna have a poke and a fettle at it this weekend to see if I can find/remedy the problem.

Any thoughts on where I should start looking..............

Many thanks in advance. :thumbup1:

First would be a comp test.

Second would be checking there is a spark. As the plug has to come out for the some test.

Then would be getting fuel, so is the plug wet.

Then it would be a crab clean and also check the metering height. Along with this would also be checking the tank vent is working ok. There is a hill billy check on the vent by emptying the fuel tank and blowing don the fuel pipe. If it holds a pressure its fine. If you can suck it, or create a vacuum its not. The vent works one way. Allows you to pressure the tank but not create a vacuum.

Given the intermittant nature of the problem I would firstly check that the plug cap is firm on the plug and that the little nipple on the top of the plug has not come unscrewed.

Only after checking that need you look for more sinister problems.

Cheers GTR; Spud & Gardenkit for your input.

Forgot to mention in my original post, that I had already replaced the tank vent, when I replaced spark plug and fuel filter.

Not to say that they can't have gone FUBAR'd already!

Will strip carb down tomoz to see if the lies within.....
