Hello friends,

I'm trying to throw myself into tree identification.

The attached tree I couldn't spot in my book. Can anyone suggest what it might be? It was taken in Edinburgh, Scotland.

With so many thanks in advance for all your help,

david

Salix caprea?

Hello Mattmoss!

Thank you for that suggestion - we certainly have s. caprea round here, but i've never seen one with such gigantic leaves, and with such a rugged bark the thought it could be that one didn't enter my mind... i'll take your word for the suggestion, unless I hear or spot any alternatives!

With many thanks,

david

yep defo goat willow, nice old tree would certainly start to get rough bark and if the new growth was in response to any pruning the leaves would be a lot larger than :001_smile:normal

I am way too late to contribute but will anyway. I was puzzling over a similar looking specimen in Scotland recently, it took quite a while to convince myself that it was in fact S. caprea. But it hybridises with Osiers and S. alba and produces some pretty odd shapes particuarly the leaf shape. And suckering or epicormic growth leaves can be enormous, 10cm x 6cm. And I have always harboured a suspicion tha the leaves of the male and the female are slightly different in shape.
