Well I didn't have a wire on mine for about 2 years never noticed a problem, just assumed it was there to maintain its position. I don't like them personally, if I was to use mine again I'd look to replace the wire.

I believe that it is to stop the cam wabbling around when not being used but it the friction to keep it in the same place when under weight is caused by having your weight on the cut away strop. I'm not sure how not having one would affect LOLER...

It is a LOLER fail - the device will not function as designed

 

Heat shrink tubbing covering my replacement cable makes it last longer and have less jagers sticking out.

 

good idea - I have used tape before, but that seems like an improvement.

Buy a positioner and be done with it

 

I love the positioner on my wire core, and for the first time today used a Cinch on a lanyard and was equally impressed. Still like the Distel CE but the grabs lay unused now.
