Big green beetle?

Yesterday I encountered a big green flying beetle. It was around an 1-1.5 inches long, a clumsy flier, sounding like a hornets drone, and metallic green. I have no photo but imagine it's so distinctive anyone who knows what the thing is will guess. So, any suggestions anyone? !

Thick Legged Flower Beetle - What's That Bug?

There are almost 1/2 million species of beetle! The metallic green ones seem to be lumped together in the common name 'Chafer' but aren't necessarily closely related. The Green Chafer or Japanese Scarab Anomala albopilosa is pretty big, maybe look that one up.

Possibly a Great Diving beetle. Was it close to darkness and wet at the time?

Nope none of those, like a scarab beetle, but great diving beetle size.

 

Habitat was colchester town centre small back garden, very urban. Perhaps a small pond in a nearby garden? It was flying around early afternoon in scorching hot dry weather. It seemed very interested in the brick built shed's door.

Noble Chafer - Gnorimus nobilis ?

 

Any fruit trees or orchards near by?

It looks right (with an old cherry in said garden with gano induced hollows and big deadwood- my reason for visiting! ) but at 20mm far too small.
