BADA-UK (a lyme disease awareness charity) recommend using an insect repellent called 'mosi-guard natural' to deter ticks from attaching themselves. Its basically a spray with a strong citrus type smell, I use it this time of year if i'm working on a site where ticks are prevalent.

just been on site and do a tom o tick twister for getting ticks out. they are a charity so worth getting them from them to carry on resurch in to lymes

Personally, with the numbers I seem to pick up here, I have to just run a lighter up and down my legs, and burn them off.

I REALLY HATE THEM!

You shouldn't burn them off or cover them in any creams. The tick will puke the stuff in it's stomach into your blood and if it's carrying the bacteria which causes Lymes Disease this is how it's transferred. Get a few sets of O-Tom tick removal tools instead. Only a couple of quid each. Smidge is a spray I use up here for the midges, but it also keeps ticks away.

I use the lighter to get them off my trousers, not once they're on my skin or embedded.

That would hurt.

This is a timely reminder. I was talking to a pig farmer this weekend, one of his men is off right now with Lymes. They removed the tick properly, but the dirty deed was already done, he is now on a strong course of anti biotics, but is very rough.

Hope he makes a good recovery.

Horrible disease.

I've been trying to think if there's a creature I hate more, and whilst I can't quite make up my mind.

It might be the Horsefly.

Yep gleggs (horsefly) drive me mental been in the woods my whole life and never had any ticks till last year and i had 3 from moving pallets in the yard by hand. only thing I had to get them out was a spring paper clip then after I used it I read you shouldn't squeeze ah well off for a little nap this tired me out
