Gerrit, David and Tony. I will be sure to get you a sample on a photo as this has proved quite an interesting find - for me too. I will be revisiting in approximately 3 weeks so I hope it will still be there and with sufficient detail to show you all. Thank you for your input - all of you :thumbup1:

I saw this on Sycamore yesterday, mature tree, in reasonable vigour given size, location etc.

 

Picture below, i noticed white marking on bark from a distance, though it may be Kretz, close inspection revealed these.

 

I have a closer view of a bracket i removed (the one in the second picture) if that is of any further help.

There are multiple, certainly 5-6 areas around the stem where this occurs in varying sizes.
