Interesting Biomechanics

"Perhaps we might even try encouraging inosculation by localised removal of corky phelloderm and the strapping of nearby limbs in place?"

Perhaps....?

"whats that about? Isn't all pruning wounding? "

Leave em to it would be my preference....

if you had a specimen beech with stazi ears all over the place what would you do to encourage stability of said forks with inclusion?

man made high maintanence bracing needing constant inspection and care, or encourage a biomechanical optimisation?

Thats too easy mate...from the current placetime moment....bracing...but with reluctance.

i was recently slated for waxing lyrical re: the virtues of retaining mature specimen(beech as it happened) mechanically compromised trees for the amenity/conservation etc etc ....value.

Bracing and pruning- all offering a solution in part, to a perceived problem of stability.

My slayer was "peeved" with,as he put it, "angelic arbs" out to save the world blah,blah..or words to that effect. I think he should retire but thats just my opinion.

He makes a good point, despite making it difficult for me to say much about anything...

"Remove and replant"- The trouble is, trees are simply not being replaced as they NEED to be....

You know as well as i do if we keep removing, replaced or not, the loss of old stock will get to a critical point. biodiversity is already under massive threat, and decline we have to push the art of retaining the big girls much further if we are to live in a diverse and productive environment.

we are the threat, not the trees!

Exactly the point I tried to make....

For me , it is a crisis and replanting is way behind.....

Have you read any of J.Barrell's articles Hama. Teaches you to suck eggs but he makes a good point and talks from experience....

(articles appear in ISA/AA/ICF journals recently-ish ) copyright is a pita!!

(Its a coincidence that this should get posted in association with anything PITA...:001_tt2: )

So called "Husband & Wife Tree" created by artificially conjoining the branches and stems of two trees.....

Think it looks more like an old fella resting on his staff myself...?
