I found it in a wood, brought it home and planted ferns round it, it's in a very shady area round the north face of the house, I am interested in shade gardens.

 

as any tree lover must be! These from mid-Florida. Resurrection fern common on tree branches in southern US

I'm guessing that back in the Victorian times, they were trying to think of a way of "disposing" of the stumps as they cleared the land to form the gardens, what better way than to incorporate them In a shady corner with some suitable plants? I love the Ickworth stumpery, I believe Prince Charles has quite an example too, yet to see it. I'll see if I can my pics of my wee effort in my garden at some point.

Charles' one at Highgrove is supposedly the largest in Britain.

 

The team from work have been over to look at it but no shots as security is hot.

 

There's a great anecdote about when Prince Phillip first saw it, he is meant to have remarked.......

 

"When are you going to set fire to this lot, boy?" :biggrin:
