I agree they are not suited to a housing estate. It is obviously a remnant of an old country house where they sold the land for housing, while they are there though surely it's better to top and then if needed do it again in 15 years so everyone can enjoy them while they are safe? I hate all this "Arb Nazi" stuff where it's fell and replant all the time 'cos it's not recommended practice.

X2.

Just because a reduced leader will resprout and need management (don't all urban trees?) is no reason to cut the whole tree down, unless you're really hard up for work. :blushing:

Instead of topping again, there is always the option of restoring, by removing some sprouts and reducing others. Yes trees lose their tops in nature all the time; thank god there aren't always Arb Nazis around to hurl fire and brimstone about 'epicormic attachments failing' and other such demons, which are easily and affordably managed by any arb with a lick of sense.

You're back annually, great, but 1 or 2X/decade would suffice. :001_smile:

You certainly have a fair point! Though Arb Nazi is utter nonsense, my initial reply came after comments of how awesome it would be to top a redwood and can we have pictures of said awesome feat. I then made a valid post backed up by pictorial evidence that topping out such trees could given their location be certain to bring about their premature end.

It's all about appropriate management and this could be fell and replant or top, a wind blown is nature at work often these trees redevelop with one dominant leader, a man with a chainsaw is less often able to replicate this.
