Anyone know of anywhere that moves semi mature trees?? A client of mine has a red oak that is quite close to his house, and he would like it moved if possible. trunk dia. is roughly 10 inches. not too tall though.

Civic trees, or barchums. Not a cheap service though. It will probably set him back about £1000.

You could always remove the tree using an air-spade and root pruning technique

wouldnt know where to start, would that be more cost effective? he has already had a quote of around 1200 from someone..... its a case of having to deal with the previous owners inappropriate planting. might be better getting rid and spending couple of hundred on a decent sized replacement. council are ok with that option, he just wanted to save it if possible.

Lee, I have a nice little Metasequoia to move, about 5" dbh and 14 foot high. is an airspade a good way to do it?

(I've only ever used excavators and treespades...)

dead easy Ed, blast the dirt away, root prune as a tree spade would and keep the roots well watered, burlap and go!

When you transplant trees using the airspade method, do you also take as much of the original soil with it?
