Tree Damage

I dropped off a couple bags of Firewood to a guy this afternoon and couldn't help but notice the amount of damage to the tree`s in and around his garden..

I`v seen similar damage but to a lesser extent than this before but action was taken and tree`s as well as habitat saved.

Not on this occasion today Mick. But i did ask the guy if he`d considered reducing the number`s on his land.

He replied to me by saying even though he was a shooting man he could`nt or wouldn't like to see the Deer shot which kind of baffled me??

I agree with him, I would like to see the deer also. Although I would take one for the freezer now and again....... What did you do to stop the damage?

This is the first time i have ever visited this location so i haven't done anything regarding the damage Mick. I could only mention it to the guy that some kind of management strategy should be put in place to minimise future damage and long term destruction of the woodland.

Though this woodland wouldn't be the same without seeing the Deer so to go in and attempt to completely eradicate them would be uncalled for.

I like seeing them kicking about but in less number`s mainly for there welfare of the herds as well as habitat protection it`s just a pity there so destructive.

If your planning on taking one for your own consumption you wouldn't go far wrong with one of these yearlings.

We get that too but to a lesser extent but not from deer. Mainly from sheep (now fenced out) & squirels. They seem to attack the bottom of some trees & the top of others.

Is there nothing that can be painted on the bark so that it tastes bad to the deer? From looking at your pics they don't seem to like the birch bark.

How about looking at it from a different angle. Let the deer eat what they fancy and leave what they dont. The woods would change a bit but thats what happens naturally, if you stop them roaming on youre land where else will they go. If I owned land I would love to see free range game on it, with the added bonus of taking something for the larder.
