Unusual surrounds but it`s not uncommon for earths to start at the bases of tree`s. They just seem to know that access to there cubs will be very difficult if not near on impossible. I mean there`s no way i`d stick my Terrier in something like that..

A good informative post Quickthorn There`s a considerable amount for me to do on the Hazel in a couple of woods i have access too. But whilst the Hinds are still in season i`m afraid i just cant touch the two venue`s. At the end of this Month i think it would cause too much disturbance to the nesting birds so it looks like September. A month into the stag season

A very romantic way of looking at it Mick leaving them to there own devices. But in reality they cause untold damage not only to tree`s and coppicing projects but to shrubs and other fragile plant life. Not to mention there major impact on agriculture and it`s revenue. I recall a guy who approached me only last year whilst i was retrieving a shot Deer off a winter Barley field. He said why don't you leave them alone there not hurting nothing on this field, the crop ain't even through yet so what`s your problems? I replied you go look at every hoof mark on that field filled full of water. There were thousands of them all over the 60 acre field. Little did the guy know that every hole that was full of water could potentially rot away the seeds beneath it. Just imagine if you had investments in timber production i`m sure the share holder`s would look favorably on the head of Deer and damage on the ground,lol. Mick you make a point of where do the Deer go?? That's simple there reduced and the surplus go to the game dealer and then enter the food chain. A true assessment`s should be made of the size of the ground and the amount of Deer it can sustain. Anything else would be inexcusable and not right for the Deer or there habitat. I could just imagine Scottish Woodland allowing it to happen up North,lol. You`d see the Deer one day and they`d be gone as if by magic before sunrise the next day..

This is the first time i have ever visited this location so i haven't done anything regarding the damage Mick. I could only mention it to the guy that some kind of management strategy should be put in place to minimise future damage and long term destruction of the woodland. Though this woodland wouldn't be the same without seeing the Deer so to go in and attempt to completely eradicate them would be uncalled for. I like seeing them kicking about but in less number`s mainly for there welfare of the herds as well as habitat protection it`s just a pity there so destructive. If your planning on taking one for your own consumption you wouldn't go far wrong with one of these yearlings.

Not on this occasion today Mick. But i did ask the guy if he`d considered reducing the number`s on his land. He replied to me by saying even though he was a shooting man he could`nt or wouldn't like to see the Deer shot which kind of baffled me??

I dropped off a couple bags of Firewood to a guy this afternoon and couldn't help but notice the amount of damage to the tree`s in and around his garden.. I`v seen similar damage but to a lesser extent than this before but action was taken and tree`s as well as habitat saved.

A very emotive subject for some whacking Hare`s like that but in reality there an agricultural pest and just a Rabbit with big ears. I don't think the lurcher boy`s would appreciate that though eh Dean,lol. A local shoot to me just wont have the Hare`s shot not at any price. The keeper said to me keep the dog and the gun off the Hare`s and we`ll get along just fine. But woodland management is a different matter and the last thing land owner`s want to see is frayed and chiseled tree`s..

I couldn't see that wee guy shooting anything but a 243 Mick Only kidding,lol. Early April Buck as well as an early season Hind along with spiker now that`s what you call Tree management. Here`s a few Sushies last year off a small 20 acre Horse paddock fancy those in a curry Mick

Definitely opened my eye`s using a Professional saw I think i`d be frit to death taking this to do some hedge laying especially with the full chisel chain on,lol. I need something more calmer like a semi Anyway it made short work of what was left on that Ash tree. Zoom in on the picture lads and see how Orange that handle is

Here`s the last lot of firewood i cut yesterday with the 230 which was off an Ash tree which had been on the ground for well over 18 months. I sold that load this morning aswell as the saw for a very modest price for both. I`m looking forward to using the 346xp on the rest of it hopefully early next week. I believe i`m getting a standard Husky chain with the saw however i have talked the guy into giving me a free chain which will be an Oregon one. Whats the best choice for firewood collection,semi chisel jobby or full chisel and what size combi gauge will i need?? Last lot with the pretender`s saw.

Today i ordered a Husky 346 xp for hedgelaying and cutting firewood. I think i may have gone over the top with the spec of the saw?? A few of the lads on here advised me to get a white handled saw but i liked the orange handled one`s so much i chose a Husky instead of a Sthil

No public access or rights of way through or along the wood but thanks for the information Arob. I`ll check the small woods site out for starters..

I don't have a winch Huck and i couldn't see the farmer allowing me or anyone else taking either a tractor or any other vehicle across his barley fields. Work in this wood is not important to him and i suppose to a point it`s not important to me either. But i would like it to be a better place that`s all..

I`ll be following the advice that Charlie recommends and work in the higher and drier area`s. That would suit the wildlife that i`m trying to encourage better. The Winch suggestion would be impracticable and the water is from a stream that runs alongside it. Though the ground does have a very high water table in the area anyway.

I took this short video footage on my camera of the damaged Lime tree`s this morning. This land did have a few Goats on the ground as well as the Horses so they probably put pay to the epicormic`s

I hope they are Ash Huck only there`s another 3 hung up tree`s on the other side and two which have suffered considerable fire damage after a caravan set fire. Loaded up
