I think they're great. 8x5 has a legal payload just shy of 2 ton, think about 3.5m3 capacity so you won't run overloaded... Fine to chip into, hard to fill to the brim though, i use the tailgates placed on top to make a little roof if i want to keep the mess down.

 

Just make sure you have something suitable to tow it, if you have a disco/defender etc you might aswell get a 3.5ton 10x6.

I have a ford ranger so what size will be best

10 x 5. It will be about the same width as your ranger and a doddle to reverse in anywhere

We bought an Atlas with the mesh high sides.

We then cut the mesh out of the frames and pop-riveted alloy panels on to make a chip box.

We strap a groundsheet over the top when chipping to stop re-bounds and it can carry about 5m cube.

That's just the gross weight, means nothing

You no longer have to downplate trailers, just keep them under the towing limit of the truck

thats the gross weight, ie how much they can weigh full. A 10 x 5 tipper empty weights a little over 1ton, meaning you can load about 2ton on it and be legal
