the Linton Yew, reputed to be in the region of 4000 years old. (debatable I would of thought) but a very old tree nonetheless.

 

Well I thought that was impressive.............that was until I went a few miles up the road and met this old character

Had a trawl, but couldn't find any shots of it during the winter.

 

 

No pruning works within the last 5 years, other than a bit of dead wood shortening over the paths.

 

The adjacent London planes have been reduced back to stop them encroaching the canopy of the oak.

 

& it used to be unceremoniously 'dumped on' with Oak Processionary Moth pheromone trays back when we used to trap them.

Only related somewhat, but just ran across this paper again. The author missed the form of rejuvenation from retrenchment pruning, but still a useful view:

close to where the Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215 on the banks of the River Thames at Runnymede

 

thought to be 2,500 years old
