Thanks again guys, sorry for taking such a long time to reply, I've got quite a bit going on right now but your help is really making things easier.

Would you be able to tell me anything about how bugs affect your job? Spruce Pirate has already mentioned midges causing a nuisance, so what about ants, beetles, moths, spiders, aphids, etc.? Do you deal with a lot of problems that involve insects damaging trees, and how often do they affect you personally? Generally getting in the way, biting, making you jump, etc.?

And Craobh, I like the sound of the 'Fallers Jig', haha, would you care to explain it in more detail?

It means learn to run like hell lol......I can't give ya much on the industry here but I can on it stateside to my knowledge and where I've cut.

the wildlife there is a wee bit more challenging lol

Don't like the cold season, don't like the midge season, don't like the wet season. The other three days of the year I'm like a pig in ****.

Wouldn't want to do anything else though.

I reckon that about sums it up nicely (though thankfully we don't get the midges) :001_smile:

I don't like it when its too hot, I don't like it when it's cold and wet and I don't like it when it's really windy. The rest of the time it's great, but even the bad days are better than being stuck in an office etc, even if you don't think it at the time :001_smile:

I love the spring, just because nature is waking up and blossoms like theres no tommorow.

I love Autumn because of the bounty nature provides for all life forms to prepare for the winter.

spring and autumn are stunning times to be out and about in the woods.

The wind and the rain can if prolonged be rather depressing, but there is always that spring around the corner to get you through mentally.

Spring is my favourite season too, for exactly the reason above - it seems to bring out my inner hippy.

Bugs and beasties aren't really a serious problem here. Midges and flies can drive you trully insane if they're bad, but they're seldom much more than a nuisiance, albeit one that can send you home on occassion. Bees and wasps can be a problem, but most of the time you can spot them in advance. Ticks can be a problem too and they do spread Lymes disease so well worth looking out for and removing properly.

Unless you're allergic to bees or wasps at least we don't have to worry about the immediate threat of death due to insects.

Thanks for the replies, all really helpful again, I probably sound like a bit of a parrot but I really appreciate it, I'm coming towards the end of the project now so hopefully I won't have too many more questions!

Would anyone be able to give me a rough overview of the standard process of cutting down a tree that requires climbing? Throwing the rope, tying the knots, etc.?

And what would you say is the most important tool for an arborist, and ideally, why?

Also, I'm not sure about the pop-ups Tony Croft, promise it has nothing to do with me!
