New to Milling

Hi guys, i'm new tothe forum having read through alot of the posts on the forum andpicked up alotof useful info. Im planning on planking about 16ton of Elm I have. It's beenlyingfor about a year. My intention is to plank it to required thickness plus 10mm. Probably going to quarter saw it to reduce amount of cupping.

 

I have a MS660 with a 25" duromatic bar and intend to buy a 36" rollmatic with ripping chain for the milling. Can anybody advise the cheapest place to buy the bar and chains from?

 

I intend to buy an alaskan mill and a mini mill to plank with.

 

Any hints or tips greaty accepted...

He sells the bars to and as for ripping chain I would buy grandberg chain bit more pricy but I think u get a better finish and it cuts a bit faster

16 tons is a lot to try out milling on. What diameter/length are the butts and what thickness are you planning on? If under 2" I would seriously consider hiring in a bandsaw as it will save you enough in time and kerf to offset the cost.

As Alec has said, hire in a bandmill for that volume of timber as the extra boards you save from the kerf will easily pay for the hire.

The duromatic bar has one big advantage over rollomatic bars, when milling with an Alaskan mill. As it has no nose wheel, the bar can be clamped very close to the end of the bar, adding about 5" of length, all else being equal. So in other words: The 25" Duromatic will cut plans as wide as a 31" Rollomatic.

Thanks for the advice guys. The elm is in logs ranging from 6-8ft up to 12-14ft length. Diameter ranged from 24-40 inches. Some of the centres of the logs are rotten, but they are still ok in the outer sections. Worst case, some of it will be firewood, but hopefully most will be of good enough quality to dry, thickness and use to build kitchen cabinets out of. Other stuff on the list includes a table saw, decent thicknesser and a morticer. Ideally, id buy a 36" duromatic, but I dont think they make one for a 660.

 

Hopefully Rob might be able to get hold of one and offer me a discount on mill, bar and chains!

 

Would love to buy a woodmizer but far too expensive for me!

As for hiring a mill or bandsaw- i want to do this all by myself, from tree to kitchen, for the sense of achievement!

 

Im in Moray, near forres. Theres a mill local to me- they have a woodmizer and could possibly help if I quartered the logs, but like I said, would rather do the lot myself.

 

I intend to sticker it and place in a barn, 6x8m with good roof and good through flow of air.

i belive rob does a 42inch bar for the 660

i think u will find out robs stuff i the best priced stuff on the net and im shore he will sort u out he will be along on here soon im shore
