Inspections

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

A few of our larger customers have, over the last year or so, asked if can do tree surveys.

We've always passed them over to a guy we know (get a meal once a year for the service

Apart from the NPTC 1 day, and 5 day courses, whats everyones idea of a training route for me to be able to offer the service.

One of the larger theme parks we do has over 500 trees on its site, be a nice little earner me thinks.

We give advise at the moment, but its never written down, and i always stress to the clients that its just my opinion, based on my experience.

Thanks, Dave

I recommend doing the ABC level 2 Arb course if you have a bit of time. It will teach you to do tree surveys as well as condition reports and will give you a broader view of the whole industry including biology, law, pests and diseases and much more . Its not too taxing and it isnt squeezed into 3 days which is good IMO. It definately made me a more confident arborist.

And i thought the whole point of the PTI course was to fill the gap for a specific tree inspection certificate as currently there was no specific proof or testing in the current education models to clarify in an un-ambiguos way capacity for tree hazard assesments?

ok:blushing: but do you need some background knowledge before you do it??

I've not done the pti, but as far as I am aware you do need a reasonable amount of background knowledge. Also I think the examination is 'open book', so reference material and familiarity with it would be good...

The PTI is meant to be a test of the level of knowledge you have currently and focuses that knowledge around applying it in the field via inspection simulation.

The written test and fungi ID are not that difficult if you apply yourself over the duration of the 3 days and read up on the course notes in the evenings.

Having said that I was very relieved that I scraped through it. Personally I think that was due to not understanding what kind of test it was. I had the experience and knowledge, but hadn't put myself through that kind of test before.

I've read members on here who have attempted the PTI with little or no field experience of tree inspection and passed.

I think the best thing about the PTI is that it's a qualification that can be held by working arbs, tree officers & consultants alike and as such is a bridge across our industry.
